Mohamed Shakeel, the Registrar of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC), has been nominated to Parliament for appointment to the Elections Commission (EC).
President Mohamed Muizzu nominated Shakeel, who also serves as the Managing Director of the Maldives Hajj Corporation, for the vacant seat on the commission. He was appointed as the PNC Registrar on January 28.
The vacancy at the Elections Commission arose following the resignation of its former President, Mohamed Zahid. Zahid stepped down from his post on May 1, citing excessive government interference.
A source who spoke to Adhadhu confirmed that the commission was facing significant government pressure at the time of Zahid’s resignation.
"Zahid did not wish to continue at the commission while facing such immense pressure from the government," said the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the nature of their employment.
