Air India, the national carrier of neighboring India, and Thailand’s Bangkok Airways have suspended their flight operations to the Maldives.
Air India has halted its flights to the Maldives until the end of August. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Bangkok Airways has suspended its services through the end of September.
In addition to the Maldives, Air India has reduced flight frequencies and suspended operations to several other destinations. The airline previously operated daily flights to the Maldives.
Bangkok Airways typically operates four weekly flights to the Maldives. The airline is expected to resume its services in October.
Currently, direct flights between the Maldives and India are operated by IndiGo and the Maldivian national carrier, Maldivian. Direct connectivity between the Maldives and Thailand is maintained by Air Asia, while Maldivian also operates seasonal flights.
As the tourism industry enters its off-peak season, the reduction in flight connectivity is expected to negatively impact the sector. Tourism is already facing challenges due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
The conflict has led to a sharp increase in global jet fuel prices, placing a heavy burden on airlines. Many carriers are increasing ticket prices and reducing flight frequencies to manage rising operational costs.
