Two new cases of measles have been detected in the Greater Male' region, bringing the total number of positive cases to 11 in a country that had previously eliminated the disease.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed that these two additional cases were identified within the Male' region over the past week.
The HPA has urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience fever and develop red rashes. The agency further advised individuals to wear masks when visiting healthcare facilities and to avoid using public transportation if they suspect infection.
Additionally, the HPA requested that anyone tested for suspected measles remain in isolation until their results are confirmed. Those exhibiting symptoms are also advised to stay home and avoid public gatherings.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Maldives measles-free in 2017. However, sporadic cases were reported in 2020 and again in April 2023, both of which were promptly contained.
The measles vaccine is administered in two doses: the first at 18 months of age and the second at approximately three and a half years.
Medical professionals continue to emphasize that vaccination is the most critical measure for measles prevention. Doctors have urged the public not to neglect immunization schedules, noting that even eliminated diseases can be reintroduced from neighboring countries.
