Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim has resigned from his position as Deputy Speaker of the People’s Majlis.
His resignation comes as a motion for his removal was scheduled for today’s parliamentary sitting.
In a post on X, Nazim said that the resolution seeking his dismissal failed to provide any evidence or grounds to support the allegations against him, dismissing the claims as entirely baseless.
"I wish to note that the resolution submitted for my removal contains no evidence or proof to substantiate the allegations made against me. Furthermore, no member or any other party has ever filed a complaint alleging that I have violated the Constitution or the Standing Orders of the Parliament through any action or omission in my capacity as Deputy Speaker or as a Member of Parliament. Therefore, all these allegations are baseless," he stated.
Nazim maintained that he had fulfilled the duties and responsibilities of the Deputy Speaker’s office with integrity and honesty, in accordance with legal principles.
"I also wish to state that I have not engaged in any act that would compromise the interests of the members of the People’s Majlis, nor have I abused my influence or taken undue advantage of my position. I have performed my duties and responsibilities within legal bounds, treating all members with equality and fairness without any discrimination," he said.
Nazim noted that while the reasons cited in the resolution—signed by all members of the ruling party’s parliamentary group—were not factual, he believed that responding to a call for removal by nearly all those who voted him into the elected post was the civilized approach in accordance with democratic principles.
