Former President Mohamed Nasheed has vowed to stand firm in defense of press freedom following a police raid on the Adhadhu office over the "Aisha" documentary.
Nasheed’s remarks came during a campaign event for the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election in Galolhu, as police officers were conducting a search of the Adhadhu office.
"Do not attempt to intimidate us; do not come for us. Do not attempt to dismantle the freedom of the press," the former president warned.
In a later post on his X account, Nasheed reminded the authorities that press freedom is a hard-won right achieved through the sacrifices and suffering of many Maldivians. He further stated that the raid on Adhadhu’s office and the obstruction of independent journalism are unacceptable.
The Criminal Court issued the search warrant for Adhadhu’s office shortly after questions were raised during a President's Office press briefing today regarding allegations made against President Mohamed Muizzu in the documentary.
In addition to the office raid, the Criminal Court has also issued an order to withhold the passport of Adhadhu’s CEO, Hussain Fiyaz Moosa, for a period of three months.
