Police took two individuals into custody last night during the ongoing series of street protests organized by the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
The MDP has been staging demonstrations following the recent council elections and referendum, asserting that the government has lost its mandate and the public's confidence.
Those arrested during the protest, which began in front of the MDP campaign hall on Chaandhanee Road in Male', were Abdulla Rasheed Hassan, the MDP President for the Naifaru constituency, and Ahmed Maimoon Mohamed, the Vice President of the party’s youth wing.
According to the MDP, both individuals received medical treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. The party stated that they sustained various injuries during the course of their arrest.
During Saturday’s protest, police also obstructed media personnel. Members of former President Abdulla Yameen’s party, the People’s National Front (PNF), joined the MDP demonstration as well.
The MDP has presented a list of 12 demands to the government; however, the administration has yet to respond.
