Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for the formation of an interim government comprising all political parties.

In a post on social media X, Nasheed said that an interim government is necessary to implement essential reforms and to ensure the conduct of a free and fair election.

"I call for the formation of an all-party interim government to bring about necessary structural reforms and to organize and conduct a free and fair election," he wrote.

Nasheed asserted that President Mohamed Muizzu has lost confidence in his cabinet, while the people have lost confidence in the President.

Furthermore, Nasheed noted that the Maldivian economy is currently suffering from the adverse global impacts of ongoing conflicts.

His remarks follow the resignation of 10 government ministers today. The President's Office stated that the ministers stepped down to pave the way for reforms.

The ministers who have resigned are:

  1. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Abdulla Khaleel
  2. Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr. Aishath Shiham
  3. Minister of Defence, Ghassan Maumoon
  4. Minister of Local Government, Adam Shareef
  5. Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim
  6. Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Maryam Mariya
  7. Minister of Tourism, Thoriq Ibrahim
  8. Minister of Youth, Ibrahim Waheed (Asward)
  9. Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Ali Haidar
  10. Minister of Dhivehi Language, Adam Naseer

Their departure comes in the wake of a significant defeat for the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) in the recently concluded local council elections.

In a referendum held alongside the council elections, the public also overwhelmingly rejected the government's proposal to synchronize presidential and parliamentary elections.
