The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to grant former President Mohamed Nasheed a seat on its National Council.
The decision was made during a council meeting held last night following reconciliation talks aimed at resolving internal divisions within the party.
In a closed-door session, the National Council passed a resolution to designate both Nasheed and former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as members of the council in their capacity as former presidents. Solih currently serves as an advisor to the party and already holds a seat on the council.
Of the 62 members present at the meeting, only one voted against the resolution.
To facilitate this change, the National Council has decided to amend the MDP’s primary charter. This amendment will be submitted for formal ratification at the party’s next Congress.
MDP forms transitional committee, including MP Nazil
The MDP has formed a transitional committee to advise interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa until a permanent leader is elected. The committee, which includes MP Ibrahim Nazil, aims to manage internal friction between various party factions following recent leadership disputes.
The MDP also appointed members to a newly formed committee tasked with advising the party’s Chairperson. The committee includes:
- Former President Mohamed Nasheed
- Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
- MDP Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa
- MDP President Abdulla Shahid
- MDP Parliamentary Group Leader Ibrahim Nazil
- Former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail
These appointments follow a consensus reached during negotiations to bridge the rift between the party’s internal factions. Additionally, the council approved the appointment of Nasheed as a party advisor, a role currently held by Solih.
