The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Council has approved the formation of a transitional committee to advise the party’s Chairperson, following consensus reached during discussions between various party factions.
The committee will include the party's Parliamentary Group Leader, Hithadhoo South MP Ibrahim Nazil.
This advisory body is tasked with assisting the party’s interim Chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, until a permanent Chairperson is elected. In addition to Nazil, the committee members are:
- Former President Mohamed Nasheed
- Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
- MDP President Abdulla Shahid
- Former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail
The MDP is currently divided into several factions, including those aligned with Nasheed and Fayyaz, Solih, Shahid, Hulhumale' South MP Ahmed Shamheed, and former Vice President Faisal Naseem.
Internal friction between these factions escalated after Nasheed was denied the opportunity to speak at an MDP rally held to celebrate the party's success in the recent local council elections and referendum.
