The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has scheduled a meeting of its National Council for tonight.
Adhadhu understands that the closed-door session, set for 9:00 pm, aims to present and finalize agreements reached between internal factions to resolve the ongoing disputes currently fracturing the party.
Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced last night that a consensus has been reached to allow all MDP leaders to work together moving forward.
"By the grace of God, we have found a solution at this stage. As requested by our general members, we have established a framework where the entire leadership can work in unity," Solih stated.
Solih emphasized that the MDP would secure victory in the 2028 presidential election by maintaining a united leadership where no leader is sidelined.
In addition to Solih’s faction, the MDP is currently divided between groups led by former President Mohamed Nasheed, former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, and the party’s current President, Abdulla Shahid.
The internal rift became public after Nasheed was denied the opportunity to speak at a rally held on Monday to celebrate the party’s success in recent local council elections and referendum.
Following that incident, Nasheed’s faction initiated efforts to remove the party’s interim Chairperson, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, from his post. However, sources have informed Adhadhu that those efforts have since been halted.
Amidst the heightened tensions, Fayyaz and Ghafoor held a meeting last night, photos of which have been circulating on social media.
