The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has refused to disclose why it delayed reporting the disappearance of 24-year-old Amin Mia, who was later found dead in the Thilafushi landfill.
Amin Mia's body was discovered in the landfill on January 28, two days after his co-workers alerted WAMCO about his disappearance on January 26.
Police believe he died on January 26 after being hit on the head with an excavator and his body got buried under the garbage.
Adhadhu submitted a Right to Information (RTI) request to find out the reason for the delay in reaching out for police assistance.
In response, WAMCO said the police had asked the company not to disclose any information about the incident because the investigation was ongoing.
“Your request for clarification regarding this incident is related to an ongoing investigation by the Maldives Police Service and the agency has asked the corporation not to share any information,” WAMCO said.
WAMCO faced criticism for delaying filing a missing person report for the Bangladeshi national.
Police said Amin Mia, who worked at the Thilafushi landfill, died after being hit on the head by the excavator. A 32-year-old Sri Lankan man, Heshan Maduranga Disanayaka Menika, who operated the excavator, was arrested under a court order.
A person familiar with the matter said CCTV footage clearly shows Amin Mia being hit on the head with the excavator.
Police believe Heshan operated the excavator improperly and are accusing him of homicide. They also accused him of trying to flee and working in the Maldives without the valid permits.
