The Supreme Court has said that a special task force set up by Chief Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed has been formed to resolve pending cases in the courts.
Abdul Ghanee decided to form a special task force to resolve pending cases in order to address the increasing number of cases in the backlog of courts.
Announcing the task force at the opening ceremony of the judicial year, Abdul Ghanee said the judiciary's top duty is to conclude cases quickly. However, there are still 13,032 cases pending in the courts for more than a year, he said.
"The top priority I want to do is to bring justice to these 13,032 cases as soon as possible," Abdul Ghanee said.
The task force will consist of nine members representing the courts of various stages, the Supreme Court said in a statement. However, the statement did not disclose their identities.
The purpose of the task force is to provide administrative solutions to the challenges encountered in processing pending cases and facilitate the expeditious resolution of cases.
Abdul Ghanee has set a target to clear the backlog before the end of the year. He said that this work will resolve the issue of those who are in custody pending trial.
