President Mohamed Muizzu has stopped development projects, while continuing to make more pledges, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih said last night (February 7).
During a campaign visit to Shaviyani Foakaidhoo, Solih accused the government of destroying the decentralization system.
Solih said MDP has always advocated for decentralization and pursued the policy from 2008 until former President Mohamed Nasheed was overthrown in a coup.
He added that former President Abdulla Yameen rejected the decentralization policy and that the current administration was pursuing the same policy.
“The atoll councils were abolished, the powers of the councils were reduced, the councils were downsized and he [Muizzu] is conspiring to destroy this system,” Solih alleged.
He said the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) has a policy to centralize development in the Male' region.
But the MDP wants to diversify the economy and develop the islands, Solih claimed, urging the people to vote for MDP in the April 4 local council elections.
