Male' Maldives: Maziya Sports and Recreation Club head coach Luisma Hernández says he is pleased with his team’s flawless start to the Dhiraagu Dhivehi Premier League, while stressing the importance of humility and continued hard work as they enter the second round.
Speaking to "Adhadhu Sports", the Spanish coach reflected on his tenure since taking charge in January, during which he has overseen 17 matches, failing to win only twice, a loss to Kuwait’s Al Arabi in the AFC Challenge League qualifiers and a draw against Odi Sports Club in the FAM League Cup.
Under his leadership, Maziya have already lifted both the FAM League Cup and the FAM Charity Shield, and now set their sights on securing what would be the club’s fifth consecutive league title.
Maziya currently sit at the top of the league table with a perfect nine wins from nine matches and a five-point cushion.
Hernández described the first round as highly satisfying, not only for the team’s dominance but also for the opportunities given to young players.
“Winning is always difficult, and that helps us continue to grow and believe in competing and building a future,” he said.
With several rival clubs bolstering their squads during the mid-season transfer window, Hernández expects a more competitive second round.
He noted that new local and international signings across the league will raise the overall standard of competition.
“This will make the league more competitive and exciting. It will also raise the level of local players, which is very positive for the national team,” he added.
Ahead of their second-round opener against Green Streets, currently positioned near the bottom of the table, Hernández stressed the need to avoid complacency.
He warned that Green Streets have already shown their ability to cause surprises against top sides. “We can’t afford to relax against anyone,” he said. “The next match is always the most important. We focus on working hard, keeping our momentum, and respecting every opponent.”
Reflecting on his short but impactful stint at the club, Hernández believes Maziya have made significant progress.
“My contribution, along with the staff, has been very positive. I think they’ve never won all nine of their matches before, or so I’m told,” he said. Looking ahead, he reaffirmed the club’s commitment to staying at the top while continuing to develop young talent.
“We work hard every week to maintain that balance and prepare for the future, and the players are following the plan.”
