The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) adjourned the session to elect an interim Chairperson on Friday night.

Three members were nominated for the post. They are former MP Mohamed Aslam, Abdulla Waheed (Dhidhdhoo Wadde) and Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.

Ibrahim Waheed (Madhana Ibrey), who was chairing the session, refused to take the vote for Aslam. He said the candidate should be a member of the National Council.

Dhidhdhoo Wadde received 47 votes out of 96 members present. However, Madhana Ibrey announced that he failed to win enough votes.

He prepared to call for a vote on other candidates, but a large number of attendees walked out of the session, forcing the session to be adjourned.

The MDP Chairperson post became vacant after former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail resigned last week.
