A police complaint has been filed after allegations of poisoning to kill the birds and fish at the Duck Park in Addu City's Hulhudhoo.
Hulhudhoo Councillor Hussain Faiz told Adhadhu that the mass killing of fish, ducks and other birds was caused by poisoning.
"We don't know the exact cause. But it seems like they were fed something. Or something was put in the water. All the ducks died. Only one is left, and that one is sick too," Faiz stated.
Faiz said the birds and fish in the park started dying two days ago.
There were eight ducks in the park, and there is little hope that the only remaining one would survive.
Faiz said work was underway to clean up the area and reopen the popular Duck Park in Hulhudhoo.
The park was developed and funded by the council and the people of Hulhudhoo about one year ago.
More than 50 people visit the park every day, while the number of visitors climbs to 200 during weekends and school holidays.
