Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has said that the Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB) Guesthouse Symposium is a good opportunity to promote the sector.
Speaking as the guest of honor at the MIB Guest House Symposium, Thoriq said the symposium could be used to address the challenges faced in the sector.
"This symposium is a very unique opportunity. It is important to take advantage of this opportunity to address the challenges and progress made in the sector," he said.
Thoriq said the government would finance as well as invest in the guesthouse sector.
Noting that guesthouses can be developed in a sustainable manner, Thoriq said it is also important for guesthouses to work in collaboration with local councils.
The symposium began at the Crossroads Maldives on Thursday morning. There will be four panel discussions, focusing on sector security, destination branding, finance and short-term challenges.
The symposium brings together guesthouses and related businesses to provide information that will facilitate business expansion and more profitable operations.
Last year's edition of the symposium was a huge success, with guesthouses from across the country joining to discuss the growth of the sector.
