Adhadhu has learnt that no efforts are being made to reopen the Maamigili International Port, previously operated by the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), as pledged by President Mohamed Muizzu.

The international port, which was opened during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, was stopped by the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Muizzu promised during the presidential election campaign in 2023 to resume operations at the Maamigili International Port.

But Adhadhu can confirm that the government has not made any efforts to reopen the port. Muizzu is scheduled to visit the island today, but the agenda does not include any items related to the port.

During the presidential election campaign, Muizzu said his government would start providing services at the Maamigili port and make it a feasible place.

"A port will go ahead, including the things that need to be done in connection with the port. So to make the port a reality and make it a feasible place, we will hopefully provide the residents with a facility on this island," he said.

None of the promises made by this government in the presidential election for the development of Maamigili have been implemented so far. Many people have been expressing concern about it.

The projects promised by the government include redeveloping roads, establishing a university campus, ATM services, building a new mosque, a quality hospital and a sports facility for the youth.

Muizzu is expected to lay the foundation stone of the BML branch, lay the foundation stone of the hospital, sign an MoU for the construction of an Islamic University campus and start ID card and passport services in Maamigili today.
