President Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Male' after opening Bank of Maldives (BML) ATMs in 16 islands.

The President's trip to four atolls was part of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) campaign for the local council elections.

Muizzu began the trip on September 19 and visited all inhabited islands of Vaavu, Faafu, Meemu and Thaa atolls. He opened three ATMs in Vaavu atoll, four ATMs in Faafu atoll and nine ATMs in Thaa atoll.

The government also marked the agreement signing for pledged projects, while the groundbreaking ceremony was also held for some projects.

The projects include land reclamation, airport construction, beach protection, water and sewerage systems and outdoor gyms.

There is a lot of criticism that the main purpose of Muizzu’s trips is to cut the ribbon to open BML ATMs. He responded to the criticism during the trip.

Addressing the people of Thaa Madifushi, he said the opening of ATMs was not a simple task.

“Although some people see ATMs as trivial, they are very convenient for the people in the islands that benefit from them,” Muizzu said.

He said it will save many expenses for the people, empower the people and improve the island economies.
