President Mohamed Muizzu's regime has refused to initiate the process to provide the official pass to former President Mohamed Nasheed to enter the UN headquarters.
Nasheed, who also served as the Speaker of the People's Majlis, is currently in New York to attend the UN General Assembly in his capacity as the Secretary General of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF).
In a statement, the Nasheed's office said he does not have any obstacles to entering the UN headquarters for the General Assembly.
The statement noted that Nasheed always wishes to be represented on a pass bearing the Maldivian flag and emblem, which is why he made the request at the Foreign Ministry.
“It is the custom of the international arena for the former heads of state, government and parliament to attend international official meetings and ceremonies on behalf of the country to which they belong,” the statement read.
The Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the matter.
