Former President Abdulla Yameen has said all opposition parties can work together if the government goes off track.
Speaking at a gathering of the People's National Front (PNF) on Thursday night, Yameen encouraged the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Adhaalath Party (AP) to speak up about the government's wrongs.
"I encourage MDP to talk about the wrongs being committed by the state. The MDP also talks about these things and the Adhaalath [Party] also talks about things that are going wrong. We can work together to hold the government accountable. That is the responsibility of all the parties," he said.
Yameen added that this does not mean that all parties have the same philosophy and beliefs. But he stressed that the parties have a duty to speak against the government when it goes off track.
"Whoever is in office, the opposition parties will talk about it when the government goes off track. That is the responsibility of the parties," he said.
"All the parties have to talk about it if things reach the point where the government is going against its own mandate and causing such huge losses to the people."
His comments come at a time when his party, the PNF, is strengthening its political activities. The party held a rally at the Bondibaiy Park in Male' on Friday night. The MDP is also preparing for a major rally in Male' on October 3.
