Malé, Maldives – Maziya Sports & Recreation secured the FA Charity Shield 2025 with a 2–0 victory over Club Eagles, extending their record to six titles in the curtain-raiser of the Maldivian football season.
Maziya, who have now appeared in the last four editions of the Charity Shield, once again proved their dominance. They have lifted the trophy in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2023, and now 2025.
During this period, in last four times, Maziya have twice beaten Eagles in the showcase match, with their only setback against the same opponents coming in 2020.
The goals that sealed Maziya’s latest triumph came from Ahmed Aiham and Naiz Hassan. On the stroke of halftime, Aiham’s deflected strike from outside the box found the back of the net. In the 67th minute, Aiham turned provider, delivering a precise cross that Naiz Hassan (Dhaadhu) calmly finished to double the lead and secure the win.
For Eagles, it marked their first competitive outing since December 2023, having skipped the pre-season League Cup, which Maziya won earlier this year. The lack of match rhythm showed against a sharper, more balanced Maziya side.
Maziya head coach Luisma Hernández expressed delight with the performance and the occasion.
“I feel very happy. It’s good news for the country that football is back, and to open the season with the Charity Shield makes it more special. I’m proud of my players, especially the younger ones who are stepping up well,” Hernández said.
He added that while his team had chances to extend the lead, Eagles also created opportunities.
“It was an interesting game. Of course, we had more chances, but they also threatened. After the second goal, we could have finished it with a third, but overall, it was a good game for the league. The stronger every team becomes, the better it is for football in the country.”
Looking ahead, Hernández noted that Maziya will analyze their performance to refine their approach for the new season.
“We will prepare to win every game. Now our focus is on the league, and we have the responsibility to stay at the top.”
Maziya and Eagles will meet again in just a few days, as they open the Dhivehi Premier League 2025/26 campaign this Thursday night in what promises to be another early-season showdown.
