The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has decided to begin a series of protests against the government of President Mohamed Muizzu for restricting the fundamental rights guaranteed by the constitution.
MDP Manadhoo constituency President Mohamed Thoriq proposed the resolution at the party's national council meeting on Monday night. He called for a series of protests against the government's efforts to dismantle free media.
"This party will protest against this government in Male' on September 3 and will continue these protests until the government gets back on track," the resolution stated.
The resolution accused Muizzu of working to destroy the constitutional system of the country since he took office. It also slammed the government for the economic decline and deteriorating living conditions of the people.
It highlighted that parliamentarians have been chained with changes to the constitution while justices have been unfairly dismissed by politicizing the judiciary and justice system.
It also raised concerns over plans to overhaul the decentralization system, mismanagement of Aasandha health insurance and corruption through projects that are not progressing.
MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail's suggestion was added to the resolution, to stress that the government may not be able to pay external debts and purchase basic commodities in the near future.
It notes the high likelihood of the country facing bankruptcy as the government does not have a plan for such a situation.
