Voting has commenced today in the by-election to elect a representative for the Hithadhoo North constituency of the People’s Majlis.
The polls opened at 8:00 am. The Elections Commission (EC) stated that voting will continue until 4:00 pm.
A total of seven ballot boxes have been stationed for the Hithadhoo North constituency election. Two of these are located in the capital, Mae', while the remaining boxes are placed in Hithadhoo. The ballot boxes in Male' are situated at Dharumavantha School, and those in Hithadhoo are located at Hithadhoo School.
The candidates contesting today’s election are Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and Ahmed Saeed (Soda) representing the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
The Hithadhoo North seat became vacant after the Supreme Court ruled on April 12 that the incumbent member, Mohamed Sinan, had lost his eligibility for office. His disqualification followed a failure to settle a court-mandated debt according to the judgment.
