President Mohamed Muizzu has expressed his dissatisfaction with the local tourism industry, saying tourists staying in hotels and guesthouses expose children and society to immoral behaviour.
In his visit to Alif Alif Ukulhas island, Muizzu said he received a note from children who complained about the behaviour of tourists.
"I'll read a message I got from the children on this island. I'll read out this message as it is. 'We want to go to the beach. But guests behave badly. At the beach and in the streets, guests wear unacceptable clothing.' This is a message from the children with a very beautiful drawing,” Muizzu said.
Muizzu said he had been concerned about the negative impacts of local tourism and that the industry should grow within limits.
He further said safaris are brought near some islands and tourists who stay in inhabited islands are taken to these safaris for parties with alcohol.
"What wealth are we seeking in a way that displeases the Lord? What blessings are there in it? What shortcuts are we trying to take?"
Muizzu said local tourism should be conducted in accordance with Islam and his government will fully support those who do so.
