The Male' city council launched the Saafu Nala Male' (Clean and Beautiful Male') campaign on Wednesday night.
The campaign was launched at a ceremony held at Artificial Beach with performances by Two of Us, the ambassador of the campaign.
An awareness video featuring members of the Two of Us band was also released. The video describes littering as a filthy act.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, Mayor Adam Azim said everyone should resolve to be clean and avoid unhygienic habits.
"We need everyone's cooperation. Everyone should learn to be clean," Azim said.
He noted that city council employees work hard to keep Male' clean during all kinds of weather.
"I believe if you all stop littering on the streets, the work of the city employees will be much easier. They will only have to pick up the leaves that fall from the trees. They will not have to pick any litter," he said.
Azim added that the council has spent more than MVR 70 million on garbage disposal in the past one and a half years alone.
