President Mohammed Muizzu has ordered research into the death penalty for drug smugglers and traffickers.
In a post on X on Wednesday night, Muizzu said one of the most important goals of his government is to save society from drugs and build a drug-free generation.
“We have now asked the relevant government agencies to further study the Drugs Act Amendment Bill to impose heavier penalties, including the death penalty, for those convicted of smuggling or trafficking in drugs,” he said.
According to the Drugs Act, the maximum penalty for drug traffickers is life imprisonment and a fine of between MVR 100,000 and MVR 10 million.
