President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to designate certain islands for the development of resorts for halal tourism and give special concessions to the investors.

In a post on X on Friday, Muizzu said the Maldives tourism industry is already an example to the world and that other countries were following the example of the Maldives for sustainable tourism development.

"Now, we aim to embark on being a leader and a benchmark in Halal Tourism," he stated.

"I am happy to announce that the government will be designating several islands exclusively for the development of halal tourism. This will be accompanied by major incentives for investors, helping to diversify and enhance our product offerings."

Muizzu added that the Tourism Ministry will announce further details next week.

Currently, all resorts in the Maldives offer halal food and drinks, but they all sell alcohol and pork. As a result, guesthouses are promoted as halal tourism destinations.
