Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced his decision to seek the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) ticket for the 2028 presidential election.
The decision was announced by former Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey) on Sunday night during a dinner with Solih's supporters in Male'.
Former parliament Speaker Mohamed Aslam, former Youth Minister Ahmed Mahloof and Male' Mayor Adam Azim attended the event and expressed their support for Solih's decision.
Meanwhile, MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, MDP President Abdulla Shahid and Hulhumale' South MP Dr. Ahmed Shamheed have also expressed interest in running for the party ticket.
Solih's decision was announced at a time when former President Mohamed Nasheed, who left the MDP to create the Democrats before the 2023 presidential election, had decided to rejoin the MDP.
While the rivalry for the presidential ticket of the main opposition party becomes more competitive, the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) is campaigning for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's re-election.
