Two Indonesian nationals released after 75 days in custody over 7kg drug smuggling case

Two Indonesian nationals, among ten individuals arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle 7 kilograms of narcotics into the Maldives via sea, were conditionally released on Wednesday.

Mohammed Iqbal Makmur, 46, and Adriansya, 25, were granted conditional release by the Criminal Court after spending over 75 days in judicial custody. Both were accused of attempting to import drugs into the country through maritime routes.

Makmur, the chief officer of the boat where the drugs were discovered, was released following the sixth remand hearing. Police failed to provide evidence directly linking him to the recovered narcotics. Adriansya, the vessel’s engineer, was also released after authorities were unable to present any evidence connecting him to the drugs, according to the court order.

Despite their release, the Prosecutor General's Office has opted to prolong the investigation and has submitted the necessary documentation to the court to continue the inquiry.
