Voting for Media Council By-Elections Scheduled for June 21

The Ministry of Youth has announced that voting for the by-elections of the Maldives Media Council will take place on June 21, following recent changes in the election schedule.

In a gazetted announcement, the ministry confirmed that the vote will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the gymnasium room of the Social Centre. The by-election aims to fill three vacant seats on the Media Council — two representing the media and one representing the public.

Originally, the election was scheduled for May 30. However, the ministry reopened nominations 10 days ago, prompting a rescheduling of the vote.

A total of three candidates are contesting for the two media representative seats, while six candidates are competing for the public representative seat.

During the previous round of Media Council elections, the Ministry of Youth revised the voters' list, a move that raised concerns among some media outlets. Despite those objections, the elections proceeded without changes to the revised list.

The Maldives Media Council is responsible for promoting media freedom and handling complaints related to journalistic conduct in the country.
