Abdulla Ibrahim (Abucha), who police believe is a notorious drug lord in Addu city, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Abucha was sentenced to 25 years in prison under a plea agreement signed with the Prosecutor General's (PG) office. He entered a plea agreement for charges related to attempting to smuggle 98 kilograms of drugs.

The PG office filed two charges against Abucha. The two counts carry a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison for each, reaching a total of 50 years.

However, the court sentenced him to 25 years in prison and a fine of MVR 100,000 because of the plea agreement.

He will serve 21 years in prison after deducting the days he spent in prison pending trial.

Abucha and 13 others were arrested in the case. It is unclear how the PG office proceeded with the remaining suspects.

According to news reports, the drugs seized in the case included heroin, MDMA and amphetamine. The operation was conducted at sea based on information from the police intelligence.
