The inaugural ceremony of the "Maldivian Students Association of Malaysia" has been cancelled after students decided to boycott it.

They decided to boycott the ceremony because of the government's actions in the case of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, 21, who was seriously injured when she fell from the ninth floor of a building in Male'.

The Interim Maldivian Students Association of Malaysia has now informed all students that the ceremony has been cancelled.

"We will always adhere to the noble standards of justice, equality and moral norms of the society," the association said in a message to the students.

The inaugural ceremony of the Malaysian Students Association was scheduled to be held today at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who is currently on an official trip to Malaysia, was scheduled to attend the ceremony.

In an interview with the state broadcaster before his departure on Sunday, Muizzu said the government would work to improve the services provided to students.

"It is the largest diaspora of Maldivians. We will continue to improve the consular service for Maldivians there, improve the services provided by the government and improve the affairs of the Maldivian students,” he said.

There are about 6,000 Maldivians living in Malaysia. Most of them are students.
