There have been increasing incidents of petty criminals being subject to inhuman treatment before handing them over to the authorities.
A video which circulated on social media on Monday showed an alleged perpetrator forced to put white paint on himself and later doused with a whole bucket of paint.
This incident occurred on the popular tourist island of Kaafu Maafushi.
The men who punished the alleged perpetrator were taking videos and shouting insults at him. It is unclear what the perpetrator is accused of.
Another video, which circulated earlier, showed two men with clip ties attached to their feet, while a third video showed a man harassed and doused with water while he was sleeping on the street.
None of the people believed to have been involved in such degrading and inhuman punishments have been taken into custody.
Police were not available for comment.
The law prohibits the inhuman punishment of those accused of crimes and this goes against the fundamentals of Islam. But such incidents have become common in the Maldives.
