Supreme Court Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir has filed a police complaint against Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) President Adam Shamil.
In a statement, Azmiralda's lawyers said the complaint was filed on April 6 because Shamil had given false information to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) about a supposedly ongoing criminal investigation.
Azmiralda also requested the police to initiate an investigation because senior state officials had tried to intimidate and influence her.
On February 26, the JSC suspended Azmiralda and Justices Husnu Suood and Mahaz Ali Zahir after claiming they were under investigation by the ACC. Suood has since resigned in protest of intimidation.
Neither the ACC nor the JSC has disclosed the charges against Azmiralda. Despite a Right to Information (RTI) request, the ACC refused to disclose any details
The commission said details, including the date and time of the complaint, cannot be disclosed because the investigation was ongoing.
This is the first time in recent history that the ACC has taken action so quickly in an investigation related to the judiciary.
ACC usually does not take any action when cases are registered. Its statistics prove that the commission does not put half the effort into preventing corruption in the Maldives.
Shamil declined to comment when questioned by Adhadhu.
