Hussain Hassan has resigned from the Maldives Media Council (MMC).
Hussain said he resigned because he was elected to a post in a political party.
"I hope the Media Council remains an independent institution free from undue influence. I hope the Council will work towards upholding journalism ethics and maintain an environment for free media," he said in the letter addressed to MMC President Hussain Sageef.
Hussain was elected to the MMC in 2024. He recently contested the by-election for the Villingili constituency in the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
He won the MDP National Council seat after defeating Saud Hussain, who had previously won it for two consecutive terms.
