Housing Development Corporation (HDC)'s former Managing Director Fazul Rasheed has been accused of attempting to destroy official documents in connection with the sale of Binveriya housing scheme land plots to those who were not eligible.
A police spokesperson told Adhadhu that Fazul was questioned and asked to give a formal statement on allegations of attempting to destroy HDC's official documents.
"Fazul is accused of attempting to destroy official documents," the spokesperson stated.
Noting that a travel ban was in effect against Fazul, police said the investigation was ongoing.
Fazul resigned on December 21 after he was suspended in connection with the land sale corruption.
At a press briefing on December 19, police said there were no accusations against Fazul.
Police seized more than MVR 1 million in cash after a raid at his home Maafannu Zeyvaru on December 22.
But after the discovery of the cash was reported, Relax Ferry Service said they had paid MVR 1.4 million in cash to Fazul's company to build a speed boat.
Besides Fazul, his brother Mohamed Fazeel, suspended Deputy Managing Director of Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), is also being investigated.
Fazeel was one person who submitted documents claiming to be the owner of a land plot under the Binveriya housing scheme.
Fazul found out about the land sale corruption in July but had kept it secret without requesting an investigation.
Since then, more than 50 land plots and 4000 flats in the Vinares towers and Gedhoruveriya scheme were sold until the matter was reported by police.
The police and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) are investigating these cases. But not much detail has been disclosed.
