President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that corruption in Maldives can only be eradicated if all those accused of such cases are treated equally.
He made the remark in a post on X welcoming the Prosecutor General (PG) office's decision to cancel immunity deals with four people charged in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
"The perpetual problem of corruption that has been facing this country can only be eradicated if all persons allegedly involved in such cases are treated equally in accordance with the law," Muizzu wrote.
According to the PG office, immunity agreements were cancelled for former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, Mohamed Allam Latheef, Mohamed Hussain and Ahmed Ishfah Ali on Sunday.
The immunity agreements were reached with them to continue the investigation into the corruption and to recover the lost money.
"However, the investigating agencies have informed that these people are not cooperating with the investigation and for the recovery of the lost money," the PG office stated as the reason for cancelling the agreements.
Meanwhile, there are more than 10 cases of corruption against Muizzu in the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Most of these cases are related to his tenure as the Housing Minister.
These include the case of awarding the Hiya project to the highest bidder, the case of fraud in the flat list and a case of awarding projects to companies for personal gain.
In addition, many people accused of involvement in the MMPRC corruption scandal represent the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) in the government and the People's Majlis.
Muizzu also spoke against the conviction and prison sentence of former President Abdulla Yameen over the MMPRC corruption scandal. However, since assuming office, Muizzu's close associates have accused Yameen of corruption.
