The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is looking into numerous cases connected to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu as the government attempts to bring legal changes that would allow the President to influence the anti-corruption watchdog.

Adhadhu earlier reported that the ACC was investigating several cases of corruption connected to President Muizzu. When requested for details, the ACC declined and said it was President Muizzu's personal information.

However, Adhadhu has learned that the ACC is looking into more than 10 cases involving President Muizzu.

The only information on these cases was available in a list released by the ACC on February 13, 2022. The commission has so far not revealed whether the cases have been fully investigated.

Most of the cases under investigation at the time were connected to President Muizzu when he was serving as the Housing Minister.

These include a case of awarding the Hiyaa project to the highest bidder, a case of corruption in the flat list and a case of awarding projects to companies for personal gain during his tenure as minister.

The Amendment Bill to the ACC Act was moved by Felidhoo MP Adam Zahir on October 27. It was accepted by the Parliament and sent to the committee on October 29.

President Muizzu on Tuesday night defended the proposed legal changes and said he would not influence independent institutions, but claimed that legal changes were needed to reform the independent institutions.

ACC President Adam Shamil earlier said the commission does not share information about ongoing cases with the media in order to ensure the integrity of the investigation and not allow the cases to be used to defame people.
