Social media activist Thayyib Shaheem has been summoned to the police for questioning over a post in August regarding an alleged statement from the investigation by the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) into the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
In a post on X on Sunday, Thayyib said he was summoned to the police station after the ACC filed a complaint against him.
"Following a post on x.com in August, ACC claimed 'not us' and filed a complaint with the police. I have attended and given a statement for the police investigation," he wrote.
Thayyib posted the document on X in August and said it was a page of the ACC's investigation report into the MMPRC corruption scandal.
According to the document, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla received stolen funds from MMPRC and noted that some senior police officials had tried to obstruct the investigation by using videos and photographs of the case.
However, the ACC said the document shared by Thayyib was not a page from the commission's investigation report.
In a post on X on August 29, the ACC expressed concern over the spread of false information and condemned such acts.
Earlier in September, police seized Thayyib's phone and electronic devices under a court order for leaking a statement allegedly taken by the police in the MMPRC case. His belongings were released after 17 days.
It must be noted that police previously cloned Thayyib's SIM card during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen. This was facilitated by Dhiraagu with a court order.
Thayyib has more than 51,500 followers on X and is critical towards the government. He was the Senior Executive Director of the Tourism Ministry in the previous government.
