The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has condemned the use of state resources for the membership drive of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

Photos circulating on social media show employees filling out PNC membership forms inside government offices. Neither the ministers nor the party have commented on the matter.

In a statement, the MDP said this was being done by the party on the instructions of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

"Similar to the former PPM government, we are receiving complaints that the current PNC government is influencing people with jobs to increase the party membership. It is unacceptable to threaten people with the risk of losing jobs to force them to join PNC," MDP stated.

There are also complaints from employees working in government buildings that their work is being obstructed due to PNC activities inside the office during working hours, MDP alleged.

MDP called on the Elections Commission (EC) to take legal action against the PNC and investigate reports of people being forced to join the ruling party.
