The Criminal Court on Wednesday sentenced four people to life in prison for drug trafficking in Male'.
They were charged with trafficking diamorphine and money laundering. The court also ordered the seizure of more than MVR 1.5 million earned from drug trafficking.
The four were arrested from different locations. Police seized 33.196 grams of diamorphine and more than MVR 1.4 million from Hassan Looth.
Police also found 14.6735 grams of diamorphine from Hassan Rasheed.
Ismail Shareef and Shania Ibrahim were arrested from a guesthouse with 6.5882 grams of diamorphine and MVR 76,675.
According to the court ruling, the suspects could not explain how they earned the money.
They were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined in various amounts. Hassan Looth was fined MVR 2 million while Hassan Rasheed was fined MVR 1 million. Ismail Shareef and Shania Ibrahim were fined MVR 500,000 each.
