Police have said that eight gang crime-related cases have been sent for prosecution.
According to figures from Gang Crime Enforcement, 22 cases were reported to the police in the first eight months of this year.
Police Commissioner Ali Shujau said that various efforts are being made to prevent gang crimes, including a change in the structure that has created a special police wing to fight against gang crimes.
Under the structure, a senior police officer from the anti-gang crime wing will work at the communication centre, monitor the general situation in Male' and Hulhumale' directly and make timely decisions, he said.

People arrested for gang crimes this year:
- Total number of arrests - 67 people
- Number of people in police custody - 22 people
- Number transferred to remand prison - 15 people
- Number of people released - 30 people
Commissioner Shujau said he hopes the results of this effort will reach the general public, making them feel more safe and secure.
