Maldives reaches back to back finals on home soil

Male' Maldives (September 11): The Maldives National Women’s Volleyball Team triumphed over Tajikistan with a 3-1 set victory, securing their place in the final of the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA) Women’s Volleyball Challenge Cup 2024.

The Maldives National Women’s Volleyball Team reached the final of the invitational Four Nations Cup held in Malé last year, and a year later, they have made it to the final of another international tournament on home soil.

This marks the second time they have advanced to the final of an Asia sub-level competition, having previously done so in 2019 when they faced Nepal and were defeated.

The semi-final result mirrored their league round clash, with Maldives winning 3-1 sets, though Tajikistan showed a much-improved performance compared to their earlier match.

Maldives took the first set 25-17, but Tajikistan responded by winning the second set 22-25. Maldives regained their momentum and confidence, clinching the match by winning the third and fourth sets 25-12 and 25-17, respectively.

Maldives is poised to face Kyrgyzstan in the final. The only team Maldives has lost to in this competition is Kyrgyzstan.

However, Maldives National Women's Volleyball Team coach, Sofwan Ahmed, firmly believes that with the support of their fans, they can make a significant impact and overcome Kyrgyzstan.

Maldives and Kyrgyzstan will face off in the final tonight, while the third-place match between Tajikistan and Afghanistan will also be held this evening.
