The first extraordinary sitting of the 20th People's Majlis has been planned for Wednesday night to appoint a new Prosecutor General (PG).
According to the Parliament rules, an out-of-session meeting can be held with the signatures of 1/3 of MPs. That is 31 MPs of the current Parliament. Adhadhu understands that the number has been reached in the Parliament with around 80 pro-government MPs.
The ruling party's parliamentary group could not be reached for comment.
The post of PG became vacant after former PG Hussain Shameem resigned ahead of the August 22 Parliament sitting for his dismissal.
Even after Shameem announced his resignation, the Parliament convened to take a vote on his dismissal. He was dismissed with the votes of 65 MPs out of 75 MPs who were in attendance.
The law stipulates that a new PG must be appointed within 30 days of the vacancy. Shameem was dismissed during the last sitting of the first session of the 20th Parliament this year.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has not yet proposed a candidate for the position.
