Adhadhu has obtained an audio clip in which Adam Athuhar, 32, who attempted suicide while under police custody for taking a woman hostage at knifepoint, had alleged the police of trying to discharge him from the hospital as soon as possible.
In the audio, Athuhar says it is difficult to stay in a prison cell with his injuries but the police were repeatedly working to discharge him from the hospital.
"The doctor said there was a lot of bleeding inside [the head]. They [police] have been unable to get me discharged because they haven't got the report. They are trying very, very hard to discharge me," Athuhar was heard saying in the audio.
Athuhar said he was kept in a cell with a mat and a pillow and that it was difficult to lie there with his injuries. Athuhar was injured when police hit him on the head with a baton while trying to rescue the woman he had held hostage.
"They [in prison] gave me a blanket and a pillow, how can I live like that? Tell them to kill me off, if that's what they want. Then that will be the end," Athuhar said.
He also requested a thorough investigation into the police's treatment of him.
Athuhar was first taken into police custody at around 8:00 am on Friday. But he was returned to the hospital in the evening.
He was taken back into police custody on Sunday. His remand was extended for the duration of the trial on that day.
He attempted suicide on Monday night while at the Dhoonidhoo custodial centre. His family told Adhadhu that he died at 4:08 pm at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The National Integrity Commission (NIC) and the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) are investigating the case.
Meanwhile, concerned civil society organizations called for an independent investigation into Athuhar's death.
The Association for Democracy in Maldives, Transparency Maldives and Mental Health Support Group expressed concern over the way the police attended the scene and the reasons that led to the incident.
