Adam Athuhar, 32, who attempted suicide while under police custody for taking a woman hostage at knifepoint, had died in hospital.
Athuhar's family told Adhadhu that he died at 4:08 pm today. He was on a ventilator in the ICU of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Police told the media that Athuhar was taken to IGMH for treatment at 07:42 pm last night and Spokesperson Ahmed Shifan said he was on a ventilator at 9:57 pm.
"The National Integrity Commission and the Human Rights Commission are currently in Dhoonidhoo custodial centre and an investigation has been launched into the incident," Shifan said in a message.
Family members in IGMH told Adhadhu they were concerned because the police were not sharing enough information with them.
Athuhar sustained the injuries when police hit him on the head with a baton while rescuing the woman and a lot of blood was at the scene of the incident.
He was first taken into police custody at around 8:00 am on Friday. But he was taken back to the hospital in the evening.
He was taken back into police custody on Sunday. His remand was extended for the duration of the trial on that day.
Meanwhile, police said it took only three minutes to put Athuhar in an ambulance in Male' after transporting him from Dhoonidhoo.
According to a timeline, it took 23 minutes between the time Athuhar was found hanging and the time he was taken to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
