Vandals have damaged and taken down a flag of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Shaviyani Maaungoodhoo island.

The flag was hoisted last night by MDP members of the island, but it was taken down and thrown into the sea less than 24 hours later.

In a post on X, MDP's President Abdulla Shahid condemned the incident and said the opposition political party must have the opportunity to operate and the people must become familiar with peaceful political activities.

"I condemn the damage to the flag less than 24 hours after it was hoisted by MDP members. We must get familiar with peaceful political activities. The opposition party must have a place in the political environment of the country," he stated.

Shahid called on the government to find the perpetrators and take action against them.

Many social media users have criticized the incident with some members of MDP blaming the "failed government" and announcing that their voice cannot be silenced.
