Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has held discussions with the US Ambassador on the introduction of helicopter services in Maldives before the end of this year.
In a post on social media after his meeting with US Ambassador Hugo Yon on July 7, Ameen said he briefed the ambassador about the "advancements in our aviation industry."
"...including the potential introduction of helicopter operations. We also covered the Male' Fahi Program for traffic decongestion. These initiatives are poised to enhance connectivity, boost tourism, and drive economic growth," he wrote.
The Transport Ministry made an announcement seeking parties interested in providing the helicopter service a day before the meeting with the US Ambassador.
It is unclear what information was shared with the US.
The minister's post added that the helicopter service will boost Maldives tourism and economy and the Maldives and US will work together in such efforts.
The Cabinet approved the introduction of helicopter service and announced on January 28 that "it will begin very soon."
Later on March 15, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stated that the service would be launched before the end of this year.
Earlier, the Transport Ministry had sought legal advisors to start providing helicopter services.
The current government seeks to maintain closer ties with the United States and this has led to criticism from some members of the public.
