The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) parliamentary group has expressed concern over the government's legislative agenda.

At a press conference in the Parliament Secretariat yesterday, Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir (Maattey) said the party has serious concerns about the legislative agenda announced by the government.

"Some laws are ones that the government is trying to propose amendments to before it could be properly enforced. How can you identify problems in a law before it comes into force?" Mauroof asked.

Broad efforts are underway to clarify why the government is trying to propose amendments to laws that have yet to take effect, he said. Regardless of the small number of MDP MPs, the party's parliamentary group will remain steadfast in working on behalf of the public, he said.

The government's legislative agenda includes 213 bills on 15 topics, including 78 new laws.

The legislation to be proposed by the government includes 135 bills to amend or repeal existing laws, the Attorney General's office said.
